Van de Ven Brace Halts The Toffees' Run at Brand New Stadium

The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on goal, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham box.
