Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these medications should be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
