At Least Six Perish in Stampede at Ghana Military Recruitment Drive
At least six individuals have died during a stampede at a military recruitment gathering held in a stadium in the West African nation.
The midweek "devastating" event appeared to have been caused by "a sudden rush of candidates who overcame security measures and rushed into the gates," announced a release from Ghana's armed forces.
Twenty-two others were injured, among them 5 who remain in serious state.
Thousands had gathered at El-Wak stadium, in the main city, Accra, with the aspiration of enlisting in the armed forces.
The country has a youth unemployment rate of approximately thirty-two percent, the latest government statistics indicate, and such enlistment drives normally draw massive gatherings and often result in disorderly situations.
The deadline to submit applications for this event was extended by a seven days to allow for more applicants, as some had faced difficulties in the process.
Military representative Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin said the crush took place before the event's scheduled start of 06:20 GMT.
The nation's leader President John Mahama has gone to see the injured in hospital.
Calm has been restored, and the enlistment process has now begun.
