2K Recruits Apex Legends Lead to Revitalize Struggling Hero Shooter Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Management Change Comes After Poor Reception

Brinkman assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last fall.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had indicated the necessity for a clearer game identity.

Ismailer expressed that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a revised focus, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

The news follows a similar step taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise development group.

Below is the complete text from Ismailer's memo:

Dear Team—

I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented creators we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re eager for that relationship to endure.”

Through your commitment and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s the game playtest was revealing. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the requirement for a sharper brand.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the input to consideration and revamped the title with a revitalized vision - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our fans.

The trust in Project ETHOS increases every day. To boost the remarkable advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce the new hire as the incoming Lead of 31st Union. Following several months of discussions, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.

His leadership and background in the competitive gaming field is considerable, having spent the last 15 years creating and leading some of the most popular titles in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.

Please join me in greeting him in the coming days. We are all looking forward to continue seeing the progress of the game in the time to follow.

David

Experience of the Incoming Leader

The appointee presently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Details and Vision

Project Ethos was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. At the time, the developers portrayed the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative step forward on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch states. "Challenge the competition with fresh skills, stakes, and obstacles that change every match. Do you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively go big, put it on the line, and hope your group can secure victory? The option is in your hands."

The game does not have an announced launch window or consoles, but fans can look forward to additional details as creation progresses.
